Week 2: Additional resources

Abdesalam_Zouita - Oct 6, 2009 2:56 pm (3.)
Where are the other articles? Hello dear facilitators,
It is mentioned that we have to "Select one article and answer the following questions: What did you learn from the article? Do you have any additional questions about iEARN?"
However, there is only one PDF file "It takes many villages to make a world: iEARN"
Are we supposed to read only this comment about it or are there other articles to select from?
Thanks in advance
Abdesalam

Dear Abdesalam,
The other articles are available online. They will open up in a new window or new tab in your browser. Are you using Firefox for your browser? If so, go to tools, then Options, then Tabs and have it open new pages in a tab. It will be easy to see where the new pages are and go back to the lesson page. Remember to close the tap (click the red x on it when you have it open) or you will have a lot of tabs. I have 8 tabs now and need to go close some.

All the three articles are completing each other, but my focus was on Edwin Gragert:
Conducting similar or different projects somewhere will have its effects internationally through iEARN website. Therefore, money may be raised and possible policy change may occur. The interactive arguments would cover all topics and issues to develop universal competency for raising people’s awareness and coming up with tentative solution to the contemporary troubles. This can be achieved by an active partnership and collaboration among iEARN, teachers, and their students. This is the importance of “It takes many villages to make a world” article. It is a plus artifact of every contributor. iEARN is targeting “learning with the community purpose” where the role of teachers is of paramount importance to cascade and teach knowledge and skills integrating daily basis concerns and activities of the international community of which everyone should know to have a say in the worldwide communication and interaction. The students should be given tools to narrow the differences among nations.

Hi Salam,
I agree with your point of view. We should facilitate children with latest tools and modified knowledge but will you specify what kind of tools can actually help them to be a successful student of international society?

Hi, Asifa and all,
It is great to ask about the tools that we should provide our students with: We all need our students to perform well in their classes and be the leaders of the future. We want them to get facts and expertise. Then, the first tool is to make them connect what they are learning in class to their everyday life. Teaching them to be critical thinkers by exposing them to Bloom’s taxonomy and the Socratic method of teaching through which the lesson upon series of questions. We have to make our students creative, and not focusing only on memorization. They should be into practice what they will have learned. Students should be given freedom to choose the subjects they would excel at and provide them with constructive instructions… these some suggestions that should be capitalize on.

Abdesalam,
You have got some very important points as you read through this article. I would be interested in knowing your own students reactions on being part of a global community or how you have felt as you interacted with this global community in July during the conference.
Thank you very much for the post
Farah

Dear Farah and all,
Through my interactions and the various debates I have had with my students, it seems to that my students are highly motivated and prepared to get involved in global educational projects. Personally, I have been using the net with them. The students submit their assignments and are supposed to contribute to the discussion, either as preparation for coming courses or as a continuation of the talks during some lessons.
Interacting with this global community provides instances of professional growth. When reading critically all the responses in the forums, I feel that there are other people somewhere in the world who share the same concerns and willing to help and suggest how to lessen all the dilapidated differences and demoralizing wars which derivate the world to live in peace, friendship.

Questions
One of the pillar components of “Global competency” is the global language. Which language are you advocating? Is it English, bearing in mind that a large speaking population of Spanish is growing fast. Also, the Chinese products are invading even small markets in the world giving favor to their language.
Is it only learning foreign language, especially in some countries, the majority of students is learning just their mother tongue? Learning foreign language open up doors to know about the other culture?

I do agree you in a sense but ENGLISH has proven to be the most understandable language around the world. It is definitely the most common language used for interaction at any forum. Beside the fact we always have an open option to learn and integrate different languages of the world like we integrate English with our national language Urdu and new product is called MINGLISH

Hello Abdesalam and Tubi,
I agree that a global language is useful. However, it is important that people also learn other languages in order to understand the different cultures and attitudes of the people of this planet. Communication is not complete unless you know where the other is coming from. Learning about each other in a more interactive way can really open up one’s mind to realize that people have many different ways of thinking and of expressing themselves.

Hi, Zehra
I totally agree with your point of view. Different languages of various countries are like many different colorful flowers in a big vase of this GLOB. Many people have donated their life to know and revive ancient languages because every culture and language is a world heritage. your point of effective communication and expression is very valid.
keep learning
Asifa Sohai
